About Us

Synonymuse was founded by Dr Oliver Tearle, a lecturer in English at Loughborough University and the author of numerous books on literature, including The Secret Library (Michael O’Mara), Britain by the Book (John Murray), and The Great War, The Waste Land and the Modernist Long Poem (Bloomsbury).

The mission of Synonymuse is to provide a comprehensive and handy guide to the best synonyms and antonyms for all kinds of words which a writer might need to use. Rather than simply listing the words without context or explanation, we delve into the meanings of the words, exploring their curious origins and histories, in order to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed choice and choose the right word you need for a particular situation, whether it’s a speech, an essay, a novel, or some other piece of writing. For this reason, Synonymuse is very much the writer’s thesaurus.
